recent speedygeese training

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, December 29, 2017 with No comments
Sunday 24 December speedygeese long run report [Giles]: "Quite a crowd this morning although only one of us actually embraced the Christmas theme... Anyway, today’s course involved some non-flat running along the Majura trails, up along the kangaroo-killing stretch of the Federal Highway (thankfully none were sleeping by the road this morning), and some brown snake hunting up Mt Majura (none were seen though- I think the gentle jingling of the Christmas bells I was wearing scared them off).
Key highlights were:
. Special guest appearance by the Captain (Geoff Moore)
. No significant wrong turns (although the captain did show some lack of a sense of direction)
. No injuries reported
. A fine fruit shake at the end
Most of us did around 10-20 k - not a bad effort when the forecast max is 36 degrees."

I ran most of the way within the vicinity of Jennie and Ruth and Bill, and in the end Giles. There were many speedier runners there.

Monday 25 December - no organised training.
(parkruns available. Same goes for New Year's Day)

Thursday 28 December at Stromlo Forest Park. Not a bad effort again, 14 of us turned out to run a warmup (2.5k); then intervals 5 x 200m (2.0k); 4 x 100m (1.0k); and a cooldown (2.5k). Running were Ewen, Janene, Bill, Giles, Jennie, Sandeep, Jen, Bronwyn, Thach, Jason, Colin, Dave, Brownie, me also doing the shortish session.

Let's hope the Christmas parties near you don't go all night long this year. We seem to have avoided that problem here in Holt so far.

Majura Trail training run

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, December 24, 2017 with No comments
This morning's trail run was from Watson shops then along Majura trails to the Federal Highway, up to the top of the highway along the Centenary Trail, and return back along the trails. Quite undulating for me, but with frequent stops to recover from the uphills.

Here are a couple I managed to keep up with for the most part.

Jennie and Ruth

And here is my "re-live" video:

Starting at 7:00am instead of 8:00am made it a lot more comfortable than it could have been. And much of the run was in shade, which helped.

The race report is on Giles' FB page this time as he was the organiser this week. I will copy the report for Friday's post along with any other training summaries (i.e. next Thursday's).

I plan to do my fourth Sunday morning trail run in a row on the 31st; said to be at the arboretum. Or I could meet them there and jog gently around West Basin, thus avoiding the arboretum cliffs.

recent training

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, December 22, 2017 with No comments
Sunday 17 December speedygeese long run report [Dave]:
A huge Speedygeese turnout this morning for the world famous Tour De Ridges runs (21.2 k, 15.3k and 10.6k). With slightly warm and humid conditions, and over 600m elevation in the half marathon, it was always going to be a tough run, even for those not racing.
In the half marathon Narelle was 4th female and 22nd overall in 1:52:56, Adrian got 1:57:07, Giles 1:58:20, Cookie 2:00:29 (6th female), Kelley 2:09:52, Markus 2:14:32, Thommo and Pieta 2:25:11, Lisa 2:26:42 and Sandeep 2:44:05.
Jen and I jogged the half as a training run, with various stops along the way for selfies and chin-ups at Trigs. 😂 Jen ended up with 2:09:19 and I did 2:10:31.
In the 15.3k Mhairi got 1:27:53 (7th female), Graeme 1:31:00, Marcus 1:31:38, Jason 1:34:54, Kerron 1:44:53 and Bron 1:45:19.
In the 10.6k Jacob was first in 41:20, Isaac was jogging and got 12th in 57.01, Ewen 57.09, Geoff (our fearless leader) 1:05:52, Ruth 1:09:55, and Carolyne 1:19:12.
Meanwhile Shiree, Thach, Bronwyn, Mike and Shuji did a 20k long training run at the Urambi Hill / Mt Arawang loop. Reportedly no one got lost.
Great running everyone. Next week’s run starts at an earlier time of 7am. See you there. 🤓

Monday 18 December the speedygeese met at Parliament House for the last time until 8th January. We ran Rose Garden 200s, fewer and with a longer interval than usual because of the heat. I supervised (and ran one interval as I felt OK) while Ewen ran early as well as running all the reps, plus Nadine, Bronwyn, Christopher, Jen, Sandeep, Brownie, Ruth, Jennie, Rae, Vanessa and Giles taking part. Ten intervals were enough for those who usually do 12, and 8 for those usually running 10.

There will be no Parliament House training on 25/12 (Merry Christmas!) nor on 01/01 (Happy New year! Run a parkrun instead – Gungahlin parkun on Christmas Day, and both Tuggerarong (7:30am) and Gungahlin (9:30am) on New Year’s Day. The speedygeese will resume at Parliament House on 8th January.

Thursday 21 December: our very first Thursday training at Stromlo Forest Park. 17 of us met there, along with several other training groups and hordes of cyclists. After a warmup large lap, we enjoyed four hard 500m at the northern hill, then a couple of strides along the 200m straight. It was warm to start with but cooled down a little towards the end when an easterly blew in. Participating were Thach with Ryan and Emily, Jen, Isaac, Pieta, Tori, Janene, Sandeep, Bron, Brownie, Andrew, Ruth, Jennie, Bronwyn, me, and a late Dave.

More speedygeese tops to be ordered soon.

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 with No comments
Message from Jen: If anyone is interested in ordering a speedy geese top let me know. They are $40 each. Men’s size is typical sizing and women’s are a bit more generous. I’m wearing a size small female one in this Pic. Normally I wear small. (Size 8). It’s just a bit loose around the stomach.
I have size small and medium to try on in women’s.
Can choose singlet or tshirt. Need minimum of 10 people to put order through. Currently have 8 people on waiting list.

Also - training starts this Thursday 21st (and the rest of daylight saving Thursdays) at Stromlo Forest Park, 5:30pm for the warm-up. We will train on the grass cross country course. The weather this Thursday looks much cooler than it has been, do come along. Exciting new training sessions are afoot!

The 2017 album of the year

Posted by speedygeoff on Monday, December 18, 2017 with No comments
My favourite album of all those released in 2017 is "Sleep Well Beast", by The National. There were also great new albums by The Shins (Heartworms) and by Birds of Tokyo (Brace) but The National were the standout.

Trail running week 2

Posted by speedygeoff on Sunday, December 17, 2017 with No comments
Today I did a trail run today for the second week in a row. But it was a race this time, although I walked all the uphills and all the downhills. This was supposed to be the "flat" course, I am glad I didn't enter a hilly one!

All the speedygeese had a great day. There were many competing, here are a few.

speedygeese training sessions this week.

Posted by speedygeoff on Friday, December 15, 2017 with 1 comment
Sunday 10 December speedygeese long run report [Dave]:
"On a warm Canberra Sunday morning, a dozen or so geese gathered for an out and back scenic run along the Murrumbidgee River from Pine Island. Shiree, Graeme, Narelle, Adrian, Mike and Brownie did 20k, while Ewen, Mhairi, Warrick, Sandeep, Geoff and Bronwyn took the short option (about 15k). Great to see speedy Geoff turn up. 😀
Apart from Ewen tripping over (which apparently Bronwyn heard from 100 metres ahead), there were no major incidents.
Meanwhile Jen, Isaac and Bron did the Deep Space 8k, while Shuji completed the marathon. Monika was 3rd female in the half marathon. Shuji did the marathon (1,700 metres vert) in 4:31:40, and burned 4,400 calories in the process. 😯
Jen, being Jen, was lost before the race started. She was reportedly following a random car and missed the turnoff. After blasting several kangaroos with her horn and speeding through the winding hills she arrived 4 minutes before the start, after the pre-race briefing. She ended up 1st female for the 8k in 39:14 (which was not bad considering her stops waiting for Isaac to catch up). Isaac was probably still recovering from the road trip, but at least he got chocolate for his troubles. 🤣
Coffee was at Guru at the Hyper D (Tuggeranong), where I managed to catch the crew after flying back from Melbourne a bit earlier. I’m doing a run tonight with Pieta, although it might be a bit slow after three races this week."

Graeme, Narelle, self, random passserby, Brownie, Ewen, Dave. None of the men shaved that morning. Probably no-one did, then.

Monday 11 December the Speedygeese met at Parliament house and trained at the Rose Garden. Lots of photos were taken by Dave who jogged around, I supervised as it was a scheduled rest day, and running laps of the 200m run/250m jog loop were Ewen, Sandeep, Miranda, Bron, Jinny, Giles, Jennie, Colin, Dave, Chris, Ruth, Pieta, Narelle, Jen and Isaac.

Thursday 14 December he final training session at Woden included Brownie, Jennie, Bronwyn, Sandeep and Jen running some 330m runs (~5 I think) while I watched pretty sore still; and Dave warmed up in the vicinity but ran on the track; Margaret was on track too; Ewen and Colin were officiating and didn’t join in.

Pine (alleged) Island

So today I changed my routine and joined the trail running group. Quite a shock to the system as I do not naturally seek out rough hilly trails. Still, 12k+ (in my case) is better than nothing.

Bright and Sunny

Posted by speedygeoff on Thursday, December 07, 2017 with No comments

No excuses - get outside and enjoy!
Today the speedygeese are meeting at Woden at 5:30pm, for the second-last time before we move to Stromlo from Thursday 21st.
"A chance of late rain" - let's hope it is late. There won't be much rain anyway, if any.

Where we were Monday night

Posted by speedygeoff on Wednesday, December 06, 2017 with No comments
Speedygeese Christmas get-togethers are always fun times, and this time was no exception as we got together at my local restaurant, PB-02 at Holt, who opened just for us and which we filled to capacity. For the record, those who were there were Ruth and Dave, Shiree, Thach, Warrick and Thomas, David, Christopher, Sandeep and Kavita, Bron and Dom, Geoff and Kathy, Jennie and George, Jen and Isaac, Ewen, Brendan and Jo, Bronwyn, Narelle and Graeme, Pieta, Janene and Gregg, Miranda and Andy, Jinny, and Jenny and me. The Indian food was great, supplemented as is traditional with Caramello Koalas as shown in this photo of Janene's:

Everyone behaved themselves especially the three boys who got special mentions and chocolate as each one is a champion in his own field; Thomas on the stage; Dom at gymnastics, and Isaac out running.

For those who will be joining us for training sooner or later, here's where we are for the rest of this year:

Mondays at Parliament House -
11 December intervals
18 December random hill runs (weather and security permitting)
25 December REST DAY (merry Christmas)
1 January REST DAY (happy new year)
8 January We're back!

Sunday morning trail runs: there's always something on, details become available each week.

Thursdays at Woden:
7 December A run and a few sprints
14 December A few intervals.
That's it for Woden!

Thursdays at Stromlo Forest Park
21 December some longish hill reps
28 December middle distance intervals

Thursdays will continue at Stromlo in the new year, meeting at the usual time of 5:30pm.
We will continue there until daylight saving ends, 1 April, then we will review where to go.

Advantages of Stromlo:
The soft, undulating grass cross country track.
Many training options, course marked every 100m
Changing room and showers on hand.
Large, free car parking area.
Security in numbers with the many cyclists using the facilities

Just remember to bring plenty to drink, a hat, and sunscreen! See you there.
